Samsung is currently busy developing the XR Project Moohan headset through a collaboration with Google that will be launched this year. They also confirmed the existence of smart glasses that will compete with Ray-Ban's Meta. Samsung recently shared that they are developing a new, thinner meta lens for XR glasses and headsets.
When I say compact, I mean that it will fit into a very lightweight design and is comfortable for users to use. This Achromatic Meta Lens was developed in collaboration with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and is capable of displaying content at high resolution without color distortion problems and can also solve optical aberration issues.
This lens is not only lightweight, but also thin and flat. To ensure that chromatic aberration problems will not occur, this lens is redesigned from the meta-structure level individually and ensures that it is the best lens that will also not hurt or tire the user's eyes. The use of holographic displays also helps ensure that it is suitable for augmented reality and mixed reality technologies.
This lens is said to be still in the research and development stage. So it's unclear if Samsung's final headset or XR glasses project will use it.
Four years ago, we reported that Samsung was developing a thinner meta-lens for smartphone cameras to eliminate the thick hump on the back of the device. Competitor LG also managed to produce a meta-lens for a virtual reality headset in 2022 that is just 1/10,000th the thickness of a conventional lens.
