A few years ago, Taara was founded under the Google X umbrella to test a project to offer internet services using laser systems. Now Taara will be spun off from X and will become its own company. Taara offers internet services by building towers with laser transmitters to connect areas without internet service.
The towers are built every 20 kilometers and are capable of providing internet at speeds of 20 Gbps. . The 76cm-tall modules called Lightbridge will send laser signals to Lightbridge modules on nearby towers in turn. Because of the speed comparable to fiber optic cables, Taara was nicknamed “fiber in the air” by its creators.
It is offered as an alternative to planting fiber optic cables in rural areas because of its lower cost. It has already been tested in India and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Alphabet sees Taara as having the potential to provide competition to Starlink. Rural areas can be connected to the internet network using towers
