YouTube already has a feature that automatically subtitles videos using artificial intelligence (AI) after previously requiring it to be done manually. However, this feature is only available to selected content producers in English at first. In an interview with Bloomberg, the vice president of YouTube said that all videos on the platform will be automatically subtitled in five years.
Videos will be subtitled using the original voice of the channel owner which will make it difficult to distinguish from the original video. The current system uses AI voices which we find makes the content feel awkward and makes us prefer to just activate the subtitles.
Google has already used videos uploaded to YouTube to train its AI models such as Veo which was just launched last week. With hundreds of millions of videos now in their library, the process of producing better AI is getting easier as millions more videos are uploaded every day.
