Kaspersky Reports Ransomware Attacks on Local Businesses to Increase by 153 Percent Throughout 2024

This isn't a surprise, especially with how many incidents of cyberattacks and ransomware we've reported throughout the past year, but Kaspersky, a leading computer security software company has recently issued a report on how serious the attacks have been on the IT infrastructure of local businesses.

According to data released by Kaspersky, they have recorded 12,643 ransomware attacks in Malaysia alone throughout 2024, an increase of 153 percent higher compared to the 4982 attacks recorded in 2023.

Kaspersky said that the number of ransomware attacks in Southeast Asia was 135,274 between January and December 2024. They also said that although the average of attacks using ransomware is the same, the modus operandi of how they ensure these attacks can be carried out successfully is always changing.

Malaysia is the second country most frequently attacked with ransomware, only behind Indonesia, which recorded a total of 57,554 attacks in the last year alone.

Tactics such as social engineering and the use of complex hacking software allow them to gain access to company IT systems that may not be very secure. Kaspersky recommends that companies tighten their IT security infrastructure to ensure that their companies do not fall prey to cyber attacks.
