Nissan, a leading Japanese automotive company, recently announced a collaboration with UK-based autonomous driving technology developer Wayve, whereby Nissan will use a level 2 self-driving system on Nissan vehicles to be launched in 2027.
A level 2 self-driving system will simply allow the vehicle to control the vehicle's driving speed without input from the driver, and can change speed depending on vehicles or obstacles in front, but the driver will still need to be ready to take over to change lanes, for example.
The uniqueness of the Wayve self-driving system is that it uses a system that can learn the road and does not require sensor and camera components that are usually very expensive. However, Nissan says that they will combine cameras, LIDAR radar sensors and others together with Wayve's self-driving software.
According to Nissan, the use of the Wayve self-driving system will allow them to reduce the cost of developing their own self-driving technology, and this will allow Nissan to produce vehicles at an affordable price.
