As reported yesterday, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has asked the court to order Google to sell its stake in Chrome after it was found guilty of practicing a monopoly in the search business last year. The trial to resolve this monopoly issue is ongoing and ChatGPT development chief Nick Turley said OpenAI is interested in buying Chrome if it is sold.
Buying Chrome would give OpenAI access to several technologies that Google has denied them. In testimony given in court, Turley said Google refused to give OpenAI access to Google's search index which would allow ChatGPT to find answers more easily. The search engine technology used by ChatGPT at this time is still not as good as Google's.
With a monopoly in the search engine business and online advertising technology, DOJ lawyers said Google would have an advantage in developing AI and thus dominate this market. In a statement released yesterday, Google said they would appeal to block the sale of Chrome because it was seen as a security risk and privacy risk to their users' data.
