OpenAI is currently said to be in talks to acquire a company focused on artificial intelligence-powered programming services, called Windsurf. It is said that the talks to acquire Windsurf could reach $3 billion.
However, before further discussions came for Windsurf, OpenAI reportedly had discussions with Cursor, one of the companies leading the AI-powered programming arena. The discussions were said to have taken place in 2024, and again in early 2025. However, both did not end with the agreement of both parties.
However, OpenAI's move to Windsurf shows their focus on acquiring companies focused on AI-powered programming. What's more, such services have more active paid users compared to other services.
At this time, it is unknown which company OpenAI will eventually acquire to further improve its programming offerings.
