Recently, the Penang government has introduced a new way to issue summonses to vehicles that are illegally parked, or if they do not pay their parking fees within the stipulated time.
This method uses Automated Number Plate Recognition technology, which is a technology that was previously commonly used to scan the number plates of vehicles entering a parking area to facilitate the process of paying for parking when they leave.
With this technology, Penang traffic enforcement can check with the JPJ database whether a vehicle has parked their vehicle incorrectly or not, and if so, can immediately issue a summons to the vehicle based on the vehicle number quickly and easily.
The summons issued will then be sent to the Penang Smart Parking App, which is the parking payment application for Penang. Payment of the summons can also be made directly through the application.
Currently, it is reported that the Penang Municipal Council and the Seberang Perai City Council will be using five ANPR devices for each municipality for their daily patrols, and this is expected to reduce the need for traffic law enforcement personnel by 60 percent.
