This Toilet Reduces Urine Splashes by Up to 95%

If you go to a public restroom today, I'm sure you've seen urine stains near the floor of the men's urinal. It's not only disgusting but it also causes a fishy smell and increases the work of the restroom attendants. This problem has existed since urinals were believed to have been invented in the 9th century AD. A group of scientists have used their mathematical and physics expertise to create urinal designs that can prevent urine splashes.

Using scientific data, urinals named Cornucopia and Nautilus have been created. Cornucopia is the type that is attached to the wall while Nautilus can be installed directly on the floor surface. The results of calculations and tests found that urine splashes can be reduced by between 85-95% if it falls on the surface at an angle of less than 30 degrees.

Scientists recommend the Nautilus urinal because it can also be used by children and the disabled. They added that if all urinals in the United States were replaced with their design, it could prevent 1 million liters of urine from spilling onto the toilet floor every day.

The research paper producing this urinal design has been published in the journal PNAS Nexus.
