Weight Loss Drug Like Ozempic Successfully Tested in Pill Form

The use of GLP-1-based drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy has successfully reduced sugar levels in the body of type 2 diabetes patients. It also now has a more popular use as a weight loss drug with it also being effective against alcohol and cocaine addiction and reducing the risk of dementia. Ely Lily recently announced the success of the GLP-1-based Orforglipron drug test but in pill form.

The effectiveness of Orforglipron taken once a day is comparable to GLP-1 injections in participants in the recently completed phase 3 clinical trial. On average, blood sugar levels were successfully reduced by up to 1.6% with 65% of Orforglipron recipients successfully reducing blood sugar to normal levels.

At the same time, participants reported a weight loss of up to 7 kilograms after taking Orforglipron for 40 weeks. This puts it on par with the effectiveness of Ozempic but still below Mounjaro

The advantage of the drug in pill form is that it is easier to take and does not require refrigeration to store. However, analysts predict that the cost of producing Orforglipron will also be higher. With the success of this phase three clinical trial, Ely Lily hopes that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will approve the sale of Orforglipron starting in early 2026 for diabetic patients.
